There’s a feeling Åsa Nerelius gets when she crosses the threshold into Traction on Demand’s head office every morning. “I feel like no matter what happens during the day, I have every person in the company supporting me. We are all in this together,” says the People and Culture Specialist. According to Åsa, this shared feeling is part of what has led to Traction being recognized as a top 10 Great Place to Work in Canada for the fourth year in a row. This year, it placed eighth.
Traction on Demand was also recently named a Best Workplace in Canada for Women by Great Place to Work.
A team accomplishment
“We are honoured to be recognized. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished as a team. Believing your organization is a great place to work comes down to how you feel. Here, we get to do what we love, with incredible people, in a place where we are supported wholeheartedly. That to me is an amazing feeling and the true measure of a great workplace.”
The Great Place to Work designation was based on an anonymous survey completed by a majority of the employees at Traction. “So it’s not about me as part of the People Team explaining how great Traction is from my perspective. It’s about what everyone else has to say. That’s why it matters so much,” says Åsa.
Care for the individual
Much has been said about workplace culture but at Traction it’s not a passing craze; it’s woven into everything we do. It starts with care at the individual level which, as Åsa explains, leads to a stronger overall team. Additionally, we reassess our company values to ensure they’re reflective of the current team, not the team of 10 years ago.
“We start by making new Tractionites feel welcome and integrated into our culture. There’s the Sidekick Program that pairs a newbie with a veteran, the Traction Manifesto (company handbook), and we also have a recurring event for everyone to get to know each other. We call it ‘Bestie Festie’ – it’s like speed dating but with your colleagues,” says Åsa. Traction Pulse, an app that was built in-house, collects data on employee sentiment, allowing the company to really understand how people feel about the work they do.
Even with so many great initiatives in place, Åsa realizes that it’s not a time be complacent – especially as Traction continues to grow. The company has hired about 100 employees since the last ranking came out in 2016 and, in three years, has expanded from one location in Burnaby, British Columbia to four across North America with additional Tractionites in home offices as well.
“When you are growing quickly into new geographies, culture needs to transform from something that has previously been very organic in one location to something much more intentional. Otherwise, you run the risk of it dissipating. It’s not about transplanting the culture from the Burnaby office to Montreal or Texas. It’s about each location having the freedom to create their own flavour. At Traction, our values are the glue that bind us together, and as long as they are at the forefront everywhere, we will continue to be a great place to work.”
For Åsa, entering Traction’s office every morning is about more than the tasks she’s going to tackle that day. “I feel valued at Traction and it makes me want to continue contributing in the long run. I feel like I can be my best here. I feel like it’s home.”
